Studio & studio equipment

I have designed the layout of the studio, control room and equipment positions to be a small scale version of the major studios I have worked in around the world.  The equipment is a mixture of analogue and digital, old and new, and all tried, trusted and well proven - important assets to enable me to produce a polished and exceptional final product.

The Studio

Pegasus is set in a quiet, leafy hillside location in Whitfield, Cairns, North Queensland, offering a very pleasant and relaxing atmosphere, conducive to concentration and without distractions from the outside world!  The main tracking room was custom-designed to possess pleasant acoustics and be a comfortable space in which to create.  There is good visibility through to the mixing console to allow eye contact from engineer to musician.  The control room, too, is comfortable and spacious enough for a bank of keyboards to be set up alongside the recording console.  Natural light from large triple glazed windows enters both tracking and control rooms.  A kitchen, with free tea, coffee and biscuits, small lounge area and toilet and shower are all next to the control room.

The Studio's equipment

I very much believe that a combination of analogue and digital equipment achieves the best scenario for music recording – it gives the warmth of front end valve mics and analogue desk, together with the accuracy and flexibility of digital recording for maximum control of the recorded material.  My system is based around the industry standard Pro Tools software, with signals from the studio being routed through high quality analogue pre amps and compressors or the 32 channel analogue desk.  This coupled with high end valve mics each chosen to suit its specific purpose achieves recordings of warmth and clarity. The studio also has a comprehensive rack of analogue outboard FX processors as well as the vast range of digital FX processors within Pro Tools.

Included in the hire of the studio is the use of the Yamaha 6’3” grand piano, and a range of top quality acoustic and electric guitars, plus a Marshall 2 X 12” valve amp, a Fender Champ and a ‘studio ready’ Pearl birch drum kit.
